Postpartum Recovery
Putting Your Body Back Together After Birth (You Don't Have to Just Live With It)
Pregnancy remodels your body for nine months; birth is an athletic event; and then recovery happens while you're sleep-deprived, feeding around the clock, and carrying a rapidly growing human on one hip. It's no surprise that postpartum moms deal with lingering pelvic and SI joint pain, low back and mid-back pain, neck and shoulder pain from feeding posture, wrist and thumb pain from lifting the baby, and headaches. Here's what we want every mom in Wake Forest and Louisburg to know: 'common after baby' does not mean 'permanent,' and it doesn't mean you have to wait it out. Your body just did something extraordinary — it deserves an actual recovery plan, not a shrug.
What happens to your body postpartum
The ligament-loosening effects of relaxin don't switch off at delivery — pelvic joints remain lax for months (longer with breastfeeding), which means the sacroiliac joints and pubic symphysis can stay unstable and irritated well after birth, especially if pregnancy left the pelvis imbalanced. The stretched abdominal wall (including diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles most moms have to some degree) provides less spinal support just as physical demands spike. And the new-parent workload is relentlessly one-sided and flexed: feeding hunched forward, carrying on the favorite hip, lifting a car seat, looking down at the baby — hours a day, every day. Layer those onto lax joints and you get the classic postpartum pain map: pelvis, low back, mid-back, neck, wrists.

How we evaluate it at Vitality Chiropractic
Your postpartum evaluation covers the whole map: pelvic and SI joint motion and alignment (including checking whether pregnancy or delivery left a residual pelvic imbalance pattern), lumbar and thoracic spine assessment, neck and posture evaluation with your actual feeding and carrying positions in mind, wrist and thumb assessment when nursing wrist is part of your picture, and a screen for diastasis recti. Thermal scanning and HRV testing give us objective baselines — and for many moms, HRV also offers a window into how much stress load a postpartum nervous system is carrying. As always in our model, we're identifying restricted joints affecting muscle and nerve function — vertebral subluxation — because that's the correctable mechanical layer of postpartum pain. X-rays are used only when clinically indicated, and we'll discuss timing considerations with you honestly.

What care looks like
Care is gentle, specific, and built around your reality. Adjusting restores motion and balance to the pelvis and spine — the same Webster-informed pelvic approach our whole team is certified in serves the postpartum pelvis as well as the pregnant one. Soft-tissue work addresses the overworked feeding-posture muscles; Avant laser therapy helps calm irritated tissue, including nursing wrist; and our postural vibration plate helps re-engage the postural and stabilizing muscles that pregnancy switched off. Your home program is realistic for a mom with a newborn — positions and micro-exercises that fit into feeds and naps, plus ergonomic coaching for feeding, carrying, and lifting. And because so many moms bring their babies in for care with our ICPA-trained team, mom and baby appointments together are one of the most normal sights in our office.
When chiropractic first makes sense — and when we refer
Musculoskeletal postpartum pain — pelvic, spinal, postural, wrist — is exactly what conservative chiropractic care is for, and starting with a drug-free approach matters to many breastfeeding moms. We're equally clear about what's not our lane: pelvic floor dysfunction — leaking with cough or exercise, heaviness or pressure, pain with intimacy, or core dysfunction beyond mild diastasis — deserves a pelvic floor physical therapist, and we refer to them enthusiastically and often; the two types of care complement each other beautifully. Postpartum mood concerns go to your physician or midwife with our full support — mentioning it to anyone on our team will always be met with help, never judgment. And any red-flag symptoms — heavy bleeding, fever, severe headache, calf swelling — go straight to your provider.
Frequently asked questions
Whenever you feel ready and your delivery recovery allows — some moms come in within the first couple of weeks, others wait until their six-week visit. Care is adapted to where you are; there's no forced timeline. If you had a complicated delivery or cesarean, we'll factor that in and coordinate with your provider as needed.
Yes — 'nursing wrist' (often De Quervain's tenosynovitis) is a classic postpartum overload injury. We treat the wrist and thumb directly, add laser therapy for the inflamed tendons, and coach lifting mechanics that take the strain off. It responds well.
We screen for it and coach the safe early-recovery principles, and for mild separation that's often enough alongside care. For significant separation or any pelvic floor symptoms, we refer to a pelvic floor physical therapist — honest referrals are part of how we practice, and the combination works better than either alone.
Please do — it's the norm here. And when you're ready, our ICPA-trained doctors can examine your baby too; gentle infant care is one of the core focuses of our practice.
